Installing Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Desktop Edition
I had trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Desktop Edition on my desktop. The CD would boot but would only display a black screen. The work around for this issue seemed to be running the install in "Safe Graphics Mode"; but there was a problem. They removed this option in 10.04 and informed the users to use the alternative install. This was not going to work. Luckily, I found a workaround and it let me installed Ubuntu in GUI mode. The command one would type is: "i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa" (without the quote). This is after hitting F6 to enable advance options for boot. My system specs are as followed: Intel Core i7 920 Gigabyte EX58-UD4P 12GB OCZ DDR3-1600 XFX ATi Radeon HD 5870 Adaptec 31205 SAS/SATA RAID controller 2x Samsung PM800 128GB SSDs in RAID 0 (onboard ICH10R; Windows 7 Ultimate x64) 4x Fujitsu MAY2036RC 36.7GB 10k SAS in RAID 5 (Adaptec RAID; Ubuntu 10.04) 6x WD WD5001AALS Black Edition in RAID 6 (Adaptec RAID)
