Bumptop is a free program that gives you a virtual desktop environment to work with. You can pile icons, grid icons, post sticky notes, put icons on the "walls", grow/shrink icons, and more. There's also a commercial version of the software, which is available for $39.99 (USD), which offers more features than the free version. For example, the commercial version allows you to give any folder a virtual environment as well.
